Zesco, Buffaloes win as ‘Mighty’ pull out of relegation
Log leaders Zesco United continued their march towards the 2017 league title with a 2 – 1 win over Forest Rangers which restored their 5 point lead with three games to play.
With all the other teams in the top four having picked wins prior to kickoff and the gap at the top closed to two points, the pressure was on Tenant Chembo’s side to pick maximum points.
Fackson Kapumbu gave Zesco the lead in the 14th minute when his in-swinging free kick beat the Forest Rangers goalkeeper who was clearly being bundled down by a Zesco attacker in a congested penalty area.
Rangers equalised in the 26th minute through a Logic Chingandu free kick.
Jesse Were settled the tie in the 58th minute from the spot after John Chingandu was brought down in the box in a tackle where the defender seemed to get enough of the ball.
The result sees Zesco move to 69 points in first position while Rangers are in 12th position on 46 points.
In the early kickoff, Green Buffaloes beat 10 man Buildcon 2 – 1 to move into third position behind 2nd placed Zanaco on goal difference.
Insinde scored an own goal in the 36th minute for Buildcon but the Ndola side fought back to level matter on the stroke of half time through Adongo.
This was after Nigerian Suleiman was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 38th minute.
Despite being a man down, Buildcon had chances to win the game but they were punished from the spot by defender Adrian Chama who scored in the 58th minute.
Buffaloes are level on 64 points with Zanaco while Buildcon are stuck in 9th position on 49 points after back to back losses.
Elsewhere Mighty Mufurila Wanderers leaped out of the relegation zone with a ‘big’ 3 – 1 win over Nakambala Leopards.
Guily Manziba opened the scores while Matthews Macha scored a brace for Mighty whike Emmanuel Phiri scored the consolation for the visitors.
Mighty has had a resurgence which has seen them win 3 games in a roll.
