Cosafa U20: Zambia off to a flying start with win over Malawi
Zambia started the 2018 Mopani U-20 Cosafa Championship with a 2-0 win over neighbours Malawi at Nkana Stadium on Sunday.
A second half brace by Prince Mumba in the second half catapulted the hosts to a flying start.
Mumba came in as a substitute in the second half and opened the scoring in the 63 minutes. He completed his brace in the 86 minutes to put the game beyond the reach of Malawi.
Zambia U-20 coach Charles Bwale said it was not an easy win considering his boys had a rocky start. The young Chipolopolo were disjointed in the opening 20 minutes but as the game went on they became organized.
Bwale heaped kudos on his lads for not conceding notwithstanding being put under the wood by their opponents.
The U-20 coach emphasized that it was always imperative to win your first game in the group.
“It wasn’t an easy game and every time we play Malawi it has never been easy,” he said.
“They gave us a tough game but at the end of the day we have won. That is what is important. Every time you need to win your first game. That is what is important.
“We didn’t start well, we looked disjointed. In most part we were, outplayed. Only that we didn’t concede, which I give kudos to my boys.”
Meanwhile the Malawi U-20 coach said they had a good game but lost concentration in the second half.
“Congratulations to Zambia for winning. We’ve had a good game. Only that we lost concentration in the second half,” he said.
