Women U17 WC: Phiri stars as Zambia demolish Botswana
A technically superior Zambia U17 Women’s National Team on Sunday beat visiting Botswana 5-2 in a preliminary round, first leg, Uruguay 2018 World Cup qualifier match.
Christabel Phiri was the star of the match after she scored a double brace in a match Zambia dominated on all fronts.
Despite showing more attacking intent, the Kangwa Kaluba coached side had to wait until the 21st minute when Phiri opened the scores from inside the box.
Zambia were dominating with the Tswana defense struggling to contend with the runs of Phiri and Lydia Mubanga.
The deadly Phiri found space again in the 29th minute to score a second before hardworking skipper, Mubanga fired home a third in the 33rd minute to send Zambia into the break with a comfortable lead.
With Botswana having already a change bringing in Thlobogang Maatla for Theo Pearl, they looked a stronger team in the second half but there was still room for the free scoring striker from Olympic Queens to squeeze in a shot from inside the box to grab a third in the 51st minute.
Botswana pulled one back almost immediately after an error in defense and they went on to score from the spot in the 73rd minute through Lone Gaofetoge.
However, there was no stopping they young ‘on-fire’ Zambian sharp shooter from scoring her fourth of the day and Zambia’s 5th in the 85th minute.
The two teams meet in a fortnight to decide who qualifies to the first round.
The winner will meet South Africa in December at home and away for a place at the finals.
The finals will be played next year in Uruguay between November ams December.
