We have done it before says Malawi U23 coach
Malawi Under 23 coach Meke Mwase says his charges have what it takes to turn the tables when they face Zambia in a 2019 U23 AFCON qualifier second round return leg away in Lusaka tommorow after losing the first leg at home three days ago.
The Junior Flames lost 1-0 at the Kamuzu Stadium on Wednesday but Mwase is confident his team will pull a surprise on Sunday.
The former Flames captain says the battle is not over and draws inspiration from last year’s Under 20 AFCON qualifying campaign where on two occasions his team got results away after disappointing at home.
With Mwase as head coach the Under 20 draw 0-0 at home before drawing 1-1 away with Swailand to progress to the next round on away goal rule.
In the Second round the Junior Flames lost 2-1 to Angola at home in the first leg but went on to win 4-1 away.
Again in the first round of this campaign Mwase’s charges beat Botswana 2-1 away and drew 1-1 at home.
“I have been in this situation before. It is possible to overturn the tie so don’t completely rule us out.
“Most of the players in the team were part of the Under 20 squad last year that experienced the same situation. We have a good away record and we look foward to maintain it.
“This the is not over. We are still in it and we will give it all on Sunday,” said Mwase.
Captain Chimwemwe Idana said they are not under pressure despite news that the tickets for the match have been sold out.
“It is going to be tough playing these guys in that stadium. But we are not shaken. The home defeat was painful but we are ready to make up.
” In the first round we managed to beat Botswana away and we can do the same here,” said Idana.
