U20 AFCON: No title defense as champions Zambia are booted out by Burundi

Burundi 3 – 0 Zambia (Agg; 3 – 1)

The Zambia U20 National Team has been knocked out of the race to the Niger 2019 Under Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a humiliating 3 – 0 defeat away to Burundi which sees them lose 3 – 1 on aggregate.

This means that the African Champions will not be defending their title at the next finals.

Burundi went ahead in the 44th minute and scored twice in the second half to ensure the result was beyond the visitors.

Zambia were 1 – 0 victors at home where they struggled to break down the Central Africans and only managed to score late in the game through a well taken shot by Lameck Banda.

Banda did not travel with the squad after he was red carded in the home tie.

Coach Charles Bwale’s (assisted by Perry Mutapa) charges have failed to replicate the form shown by Beston Chambeshi’s class of 2017 that lifted the Africa Cup and qualified to the World Cup in South Korea.

  1. Consistent Bana libe good luck to those Burundi gran fathers still if our lads were good they would have prevailed

  2. Consistency is what we don’t have in Zambia. Beston Chambesh was doing very way with under 20,but within a year of success he is promoted to something else and all the players scraped and restart with a new group all again How do we progress like this? Very discouraging!!!

  3. Beston Chambeshi dream team set a very high bar which this current under 20 squad has failed to emulate and the writing was on the wall that this squad lacks quality in almost all the department’s with only two if not three exceptional players. Going back to the drawing board story continues.

  4. How did this coach find himself there with such a low pedigree…. A division two coach for that matter …honestly are we serious with the way we handle issues …we can’t be appointing any human being becoz he is found at the stadium to coach Zambia …

  5. We made a mistake by graduating all the previous under 20 .we should have only replaced Boyd musonda and fashion sakala. The rest are still under 20 and still qualify to play for the under 20

  6. i wonder why Faz did away with beston Chambeshi. Bestone is good at identifying and coaching under 20. why not utilise that resource to the full so that we have a pool of good young players each year.

what has happened is just mismanagement of resources.

  7. @CJ from RSA and the rest. I have been wondering why Beston was moved so quickly. Mo consistency at all. Consistency is the only currency that matters.(not Dollars)

Beston knew what needed to be done.He had been on this road before. Nepotism in some appointments especially in Africa.
