TP Mazembe bundled out of 2017 CAF Champions League

Five time African Champions TP Mazembe have been eliminated from the 2017 CAF Champions League tournament by CAPS United of Zimbabwe.

The two teams played out to a goalless draw in Zimbabwe for the home side to proceed on the away goals rule after they had held on to a 1 – 1 draw in the first leg in Lubumbashi.

There was not much to talk about in Sunday’s game but the first leg, where the Zimbabweans took an early lead and the Congo DR giants were only rescued by a Rainford Kalaba goal.

Kalaba, Kabaso Chongo and Given Singuluma all made the one hour flight to Harare while Nathan Sinkala missed out on the 18 man squad.

But it was only the skipper Kalaba who made the starting XI and he completed the entire game.

Singuluma came on in the 67th minute as Mazembe rallied to rescue the game but they still failed to make the break.

As was the case last year, the expensively assembled Mazembe side who are 2016 Confederations Cup Champions will now drop to the second tier of Confederations Cup.

Ironically, CAPS played Zanaco in preparation for the Champions League games who also eliminated Yanga I’m similar fashion on away goals.

TP Mazembe this year looks out of sorts and am not surprized they were dumped out of the champions league. Watched them play in the supercup in Pretoria and their players lacked motivation and even lacked fitness. Sinkala and Kalaba looked very average in their output.

  7. our Zambian players at mazembe must move, its high time you tried other teams even in our local league
    hard luck

Leaving a club because they are not winning…they must develop a winning mentality…this will build mental toughness. We don’t want quitters. Let them bring TP Mazembe back….they will earn my respect more and football will respect them
