Throwback Thursday – Kalusha Bwalya

Kalusha Bwalya – 1988 Africa Footballer of the Year, Current FAZ President.

At club level he started playing for Mufulira Blackpool as a 16-year-old and scored on his debut in 1979.

At international level, he debuted against Sudan in April 1983 at Dag Hammarskjoeld Stadium in a Cup of Nations qualifier in Ndola, and scored his first goal against Uganda in a World Cup qualifier the following year at the same venue.

He was Chipolopolo head coach from 2003 to 2006 and on 5 September 2004, Zambia played Liberia, and the match was tied 0–0 minutes before the end. With the striking partnership of Dudley Fichite, Collins Mbesuma and Jacob Mulenga faltering, Kalu pulled his boots on and with a short warm-up pulled out Fichite for himself in the 68th minute with crowd chanting his name. He scored from a free kick with virtually the last kick of the game in 91st minute to give Zambia a 1 – 0 victory at age 41.

Great Kalu’s Zambia National Team last Game was COSAFA Cup Final, against Angola, on 20 November 2004 at Independence Stadium which saw him miss a penalty with fans later hauling insults at him as Zambia lost the cup on post match penalties.

  1. NEWS JUST IN

The Absa Premiership’s leading scorer Collins Mbesuma may want to have a word with PSL officials after he was denied his 12th goal of the season on Wednesday.

The Zambian striker played for Mpumalanga Black Aces in their 2-2 draw at Ajax Cape Town and clearly got a slight touch to a shot from Thanduyise Khuboni for AmaZayoni’s first goal.

The touch proved vital as it wrong-footed Ajax goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola, who will nonetheless be disappointed he was not able to make the save.

But referee Thando Ndzandzeka either missed the deflection or ignored it as his official report has given the goal to Khuboni.

Mbesuma will hope the moment does not prove crucial come the end of the season in the race for the Golden Boot, which carries a cash prize.

The burly forward is therefore left on 11 goals for the season, three ahead of Khama Billiat (Mamelodi Sundowns) and Prince Nxulamo (Ajax Cape Town).

  2. mark my words, herve is a perpetual failure. morocco have made a mistake if indeed theve hired them. his days of fluking trophies with teams destined to win are over. renard can never succeed without destiny

    • I didn’t know has the same description as a winner. Once could be a fluke, but twice nah! Let the haters burn with envy and whilst HR rolls the cash. Not suited to club football but certainly a hit with national teams. But again i wonder, why doesn’t “Destiny” smile on most of these so called good coaches in Africa?

  3. This is a tough one. Those Arabic signs surely have clues. I can only note he wasn’t wearing the captain’s armband yet…It’s Melu’s era.

  4. ba zamfoot, last month kalusha bwalya evn this month??? U re campaigning for him.good footballer that i cnt take away frm him but useless administrator.

    • I think Kalu is the only one who achieved his true potential…..thanks to great nurturing in Belgium and Holland but we’ve also lost a long the way a great number of could-have-become greats such as Charles Musonda whose career was prematurely ended due to injury and those who just failed to blossom because of indiscipline and lack of focus…there is good number of them. We each have our own individual lists but there is unanimaty on the following 2: Emmanuel Zulu and Dabwitso Nhhoma

  5. joseph mulilo.im pretty sure i wsnt tokin to u.but i wont lower myself to ur level.abafyashi bandi let him rest in peace.tok to me
