CAN 2000, Nigeria Finals Group C
23.01.00 Zambia 0 – 2 Egypt (Sani Abacha Stadium)
29.01.00 Zambia 1 – 1 Burkinafaso (Sani Abacha Stadium)
01.02.00 Zambia 2 – 2 Senegal (Lagos)
Coached by the late Ben Bamfuchile, Zambia swept to the finals without losing a game only drawing once at home against Congo DR.
With that background and looking at the team assembled which included Mwape Miti, Andrew Tembo, Moses Sichone, Elijah Tana, Andrew Sinkala led by ‘Great Kalu’ Kalusha Bwalya, the team massively disappointed when they failed to win a game in the group stage.
The famous response by Bamfuchile of “I did not want to disturb the rythmn of the game,” will resonate with many fans. This was after he was asked why he did not make changes when Zambia was being overrun by the Egyptians.
In the picture, this is the team which featured in the final group stage match which saw Zambia twice come from behind to hold Senegal 2 – 2 with Laughter Chilembi and Kalusha Bwalya on target.
Billy Named the team –
Standing left to right: Elijah Tana, Manasseh ‘Bone Breaker’ Mwanza, Andrew Sinkala, Jones Mwewa, Dennis Lota, Kalusha Bwalya.
Squatting left to right: Andrew Tembo, Moses Sichone, Emmanuel Msichili, Laughter Chilembi, Bernard Makufi.

This was not CAN 2002 (which Kalu did not feature at) but CAN 2000. After losing the first game 2-0 to Egypt, we drew 1-1 with Burkina Faso after taking an early lead through Lota but allowed them to equalize at the death.
In a must-win match against Senegal, we were actually trailing 2-1 until Great Kalu scored a late penalty which he at first missed but forced the rebound over the line. It was the first time I saw him miss one for Zambia. The 2-2 draw was not enough to see us through and Ben Bamfuchile paid the price for among other things, not standing up and not making changes during the Egypt defeat.
Afterwards, FAZ attempted to claim a cash amount which was due to them for wearing the L-Sporto strip at the CAN but their agent Felix Sapao insisted that they should provide evidence that Zambia wore the company’s strip (despite the TV feed clearly showing the L-Sporto kit). Eventually FAZ did away with the L-Sporto deal.
Can readily recognize Elijah Tana, Andrew Sinkala, Jones Mwewa, Dennis Lota , Kalusha Bwalya amongst those standing.
Tehn Andrew Tembo and Moses Sichone, abashala aba 4 awe not even the goal keeper. Bena Nshibeshibe.
Is this Laughter Chilembi, (second right, squatting?)
Yes it is
Yes, Laughter Chilembi.
Kalusha Bwalya. From lining up with the likes of Micheal Chabala, Alex Chola, Jerricho Shinde, Jones Chilengi, Jack Chanda ( Last Weeks Throwback Thursday ) to Lining up with Laughter Chilembi, Dennis Lota, Elijah Tana, Andrew Sinkala, Jones Mwewa.
Standing. Elijah Tana, Manaseh Mwanza, Andrew Sinkala, Jones Mwewa ( MHSRIP), Dennis Lota ( MHSRIP) Great Kalu
I know all the players and the game/tournament but I will refrain from answering too early and being a spolier. I will let others ‘sabaila’ first… Lol!
I only know 7 faces from this team. There are 4 I do not know and have never watched. Could the keeper be a Poto Joseph from GBFC and the last guy squatting far right resembles Webby Chikabala (not very sure???)
It should be from that period we used to struggle
we r still struggling
This was in 2000, we wore an L-Sporto jersey and the ‘keeper was Emmanuel Mischili. No, it was after Chikabala’s time.
TANA.MANASEH MWANZA.JONES MWEWA .LOTA. KALU squatting ANDREW TEMBO .SICHONE . STEVEN KABWE.CHILEMBI . CHIKABALA
There is no Chikabala naimwe. By that time, Chikabala’s time had long gone.
Standing left to right: Elijah Tana, Manasseh Mwanza, Andrew Sinkala, Jones Mwewa, Dennis Lota, Kalusha Bwalya.
Squatting left to right: Andrew Tembo, Moses Sichone, Emmanuel Msichili, Laughter Chilembi, Bernard Makufi.
This was the time when Zambian football had really hit one of it’s lowest.
correct but u have said it too soon my man; u shud have let them sabaila first. Wanted to see the guru’s of Zambian football and i have just seen that u, Billy, are a guru.
Well, I am not sure @Colle if I am a guru. But all I can say is that I am an ardent follower of Zambian football. There people on this forum who are well knowledgeable of Zambian football like Uncle Bobs.
1.Emmanuel Mschili 2.Laughter Chilembe 3.Mannaseh Mwanza 4.Jones Mwewa 5.Elijah Tana 6.Moses Sichone 7.Andrew Tembo 8.Andrew Sinkala 9.Bernard Makufi 10.Dennis Lota 11.Great Kalu
@Billy this was at the 2002 Africa cup in a game against either Senegal or Egypt…we lost both games 1-0 and 2-1 respectively
I should think so, @Colle.
Last week some said 98 jersey was Admiral when infact Reebok-kekeekeke. Billy total pa total (Was also typing as u posted)
Indeed Uncle Bobs. I also saw that. Lol! Coincidence.
This jersey like our currently Zawa uniform like falls in the ugliest ever! The Afcon 2012 Green and Admiral Orange or Copper Of Afcon 82 are my favourite
Very true Uncle Bobs. Sometimes I wonder why we have to go down instead of what we had at AFCON 2012. I have failed to understand why FAZ have to lower the standards after that famous 2012 jersey.
Mannaseh ‘Bone Breaker’ Mwanza
mmmh in a game against Egypt Gift Kampamba started and he scored the equaliser….just remembered. So this could not against Egypt…it could be against Tunisia and it ended 0-0.
This was an ugly Jersey. when you look at this one, you can really appreciate the current dispensation . We are not doing too badly jersey wise.
Ummh my man have u seen the Zawa uniform like one.
If we are talking about the Africa cup of nations of 2002, then this image is not from that time, as Zambia used the same jersey (orange tops, Black shorts and orange socks in the 3 games they played) Gift Kampamba, Harry Milanzi and Dennis Lota’s Younger Brother Charles Lota were part of the squad and the goalkeeper was Davies Phiri. Kalu did not take part in that tournment. I think Mark Sinyangwe played in that tournment too. I recall cause I watched all Zambia’s games on tele
u r right kalu was nt in the 2002 afcon….this should be 2000
It’s 2000 indeed
The lineups by Billy & Bobs are correct. This was not CAN 2002 (which Kalu did not feature at) but CAN 2000. After losing the first game 2-0 to Egypt, we drew 1-1 with Burkina Faso after taking an early lead through Lota but allowed them to equalize at the death.

Eventually FAZ did away with the L-Sporto deal.
The above line-up was for the final group match against Senegal.
Brilliant man. Kalu I think against Zaire in the 1990 World Cup qualifiers at Independence had his penalty saved by Pangi Merikan but scored on a rebound
Atleast our 2012 took some of the most meaningful penalties….
What are the most meaningful penalty kicks in Zambian history???
data saana…. i remember the Senegal game…it was 2000 for sure.
I did not Watch any of the qualifying games for 2004 AFCON, from the image that does not look like Independence, could the game vs Benin, Sudan (Tanzania pulled out at some point). Just tyring to rolled back my memory. I recall we failed to qualify after we were beaten by Benin 3-0, where players complained of mistreatment by the hosts
Thanks
roll back
Easily the worst jersey any club or country in the whole world could ever have. Shocking!
Like our Current Zawa uniform like. Same with our current Nkana Umbro very ugly and the two need to be done away with-let’s cut the losses!
Indeed very ugly jersey, its very unlike Zambia how did FAZ of that time even allow this mess? These throwbacks are really nice bringing back good memories
Yes the jersey is not good. I recall CHAN 2002, when Zambia went with another not so good jersey. To make matters worse the team travelled with only one set of jerseys. The then FAZ wanted to cheat the nation but the players spoke the truth. 3 games ukwabula uku chinja po, ala twafuma ukutali
But how does ZESCO manage? If a club like ZESCO can manage proper uniforms, so should FAZ?
I conquer wit billy and uncle bobs line up except mwanza I think its gift kampamba Afcon 2000 Zambia 2 Senegal 2 scorers(chilembi & Kalu)
He’ll no, that’s not Gift Kampamba but Mannaseh Mwanza!
Yes.Kalu had penalty saved but scored from the resulting rebound. Chilembi found himself in the box and got injured in the process of scoring.Ba Msichili was full of nerves
ba msichili was a serious serious suspect..i remember one game against mozambique..(cosafa)…he actually dived towards a shot on goal…it was unorthodox and weird ka
To do a summary nomba…i knew all those names…i just wanted to see if how many pipo wud be correct apart from me….
Lol!!!!
Even i know Gift Kampanba is not in this team. Hahaha.
So was alternative of this strip the one with the big shiney copper/gold eagle on??? Was it white?..
This strip here is not good. It looks like nigeria even with the decoration on the arms. Only thing that saves it is the eagle but even then..
Commentng on the jeysey we ve been very poorly supplied ba faz is always lookn at the cheapest tht even an individual can afford to buy for te national team, let the business community to sponser and advatice on da jeysey mayb will have a quality thn,,,jeyseys paly a be roll…look at the spepolopolo jey in da pics above its nice and quality
You are wrong you dont seem to understand technical sponsorship . The key in every deal is ‘revenue’,other things are just secondary
