Throwback Thursday: 1996 AFCON Tournament

The team that failed to live up to its billing.

After reaching the finals of the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, Zambia returned to the continental show-piece in South Africa in 1996 with a re-enforced team which looked ready to go one step further than the 1994 team.

Coming into the tournament on a string of good results, the Zambia national team looked hot favorites to win the tournament and they started with a 0 – 0 draw against Algeria before they before they thrashed Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone with 4 goal margins.

In the quarter finals Zambia beat Egypt 3 – 1 to qualify to the semi-finals.

Zambia lost 4 – 2 to Tunisia to settle for 3rd place after beating Ghana 1- 0 in the third and fourth place play-off.

With Johnson Bwalya, Mwape Miti, Joel Bwalya, Davies Phiri, Aggrey Chiyangi all coming off the bench, Zambia Roald Poulsen looked like he had assembled a team to concur Africa but something went wrong in the semi-final….

Name the starting XI and the game in which Poulsen played this team at the 1996 tournament.

    Zambian national team was over confident. We thought Egypt was the biggest hurdle.After beating Egypt,We had won the cup even before kicking the ball.Tunisia had come for a friendly before the fixtures foe 96 afcon were released and we won 2-0.

    It was rumored that before the tunisia game, the did not eat nshima but opted for rice hence the way they played.

    What game was it? This stadium gives me no clue….but Ghana, Egypt, Tunisia and Burkina Faso are definitely out. Left with Algeria, Sierra Leone…. I choose Sierra Leone because Algeria wears a lot of green so it wouldn’t have been a good idea to wear green.

    @Kampinda. This was the Tunisia game which Zambia lost 4-2. I remember because it was the only game in AFCON 96 that Zambia wore the all green jersey.

    I remember this game whilst @ primary but missed the game coz i was in class. Only saw the highlights on Znbc. What a team it was.
