Ten man Zanaco lose to Wydad to bow out of Champions League
Zambian champions Zanaco have bowed out of the 2017 CAF Champions League after they succumbed to a 1 – 0 loss to Wydad Casablanca in Morocco.
It was a gallant performance by Zanaco who played with 10 men in the last 30 minutes when Taonga Bwembya was red carded and they will rue the missed chances in a game they created more than their hosts.
Wydad started well and were knocking in the first minute but Numba Mumamba’s boys showed that they meant business and were unfazed by the electric atmosphere as they responded with some good play going forward with pace.
It was an end to end encounter and Saith Sakala found space from 30 yards, he cracked a volley which was tipped out for a corner in the 23rd minute.
Wydad responded with a counter attack from the resultant corner but Nsabata was looking impenetrable as he he dived to his right to pick the ball at full stretch.
He immediately released Augustine Mulenga on the left and a ping-pong ensued in the Wydad box with the ball falling kindly for Enerst Mbewe in the box but his shot was off target when he should have given the ‘Bankers’ the lead in the 24th minute.
The turning point of the match came in the 60th minute when Taonga Bwembya mistimed a tackle on the edge of the box as he tried to clear the ball and ended up kicking the Moroccan attacker.
The referee went to his pocket and sent off the right back for a second bookable offence.
However it was Zanaco who were straight back in attack in the 64th minute when Augustine Mulenga made a solo run into the box, beat the keeper who had come to block him and squared the ball for Saith Sakala but the usually prolific striker sent the best chance begging when he shot over the bar.
