Senegal bow out to leave Zambia as Africa’s sole representative

Substitute Ronaldo Cisneros came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 89th minute in Mexico’s 1-0 victory over ten-man Senegal in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017.

Cisneros grabbed his first goal since Mexico’s first match at Korea Republic 2017 in a 3-2 win over Vanuatu. This time, the Santos Laguna forward had to produce coming off the bench. Two substitutes were involved in the goal. Diego Aguilar whipped in a low cross that found its way through Senegal’s six-yard box and to the feet of a waiting Cisneros, who made no mistake from close range.

The first half was cagey and produced very little in clear goalscoring opportunities. Ibrahima N’diaye came closest to scoring when he won possession in Mexico’s defensive half before firing a low show, which forced a save from Abraham Romero. Akhibou Ly had the opportunity to put away the rebound, but he failed to steer his close-range effort on target.

The game took a significant turn in the 71st minute when Alioune Gueye received his second yellow card of the match and therefore, his marching orders.

Mexico were the stronger side for much of the second half, producing a few clear chances, but it was not until the 89th minute until they found the breakthrough courtesy of Cisneros. El Tri will now face England in the quarter-finals on 5 June in Cheonan.

  1. Good for Zambia but not good for Africa. This is the same old reason that is always used against Africa having more teams at these tournaments, we bow out to early. It would have been nice to have at least two African teams in the quarters. That would be a sure stamp of authority.

Anyway that said it is really good that an African team is making such a mark at this tournament and it is even better it is my own country doing this.

    • The reason we Aftican teams remain few in tournaments is number of representation. While we may talk of quality of play, let’s not ignore the power of numbers which works in the favour of Europe as well as South America! Meantime, it’s go Chipolopolo boys go!!!

  2. Senegal were hard done by the referee by reducing them to 10 men before the red card senegal was the better team

  3. Always sad to see all your neighbours eliminated, but this is the fillip we need to drive and strive higher for Mother Zambia and Mama Africa.
God Bless Africa and Our beloved Zambia.

  4. Zamfoot is happy Senegal is out. I don’t think Zamfoot would post something like “Senegal is Africa’s sole rep after Zambia was knocked out if the opposite happened in the week. How Albeit I think we would have a good game on Monday.
