Russia World Cup qualification not my target – Nyirenda

Chipolopolo coach Wedson Nyirenda has stated that he will not resign even if the Zambia national soccer team fails to qualify to the 2018 Russia World Cup as it is not his prime target.

Responding to a question on what his targets are now that he has been confirmed as national team coach, Wada said his focus is to build a team as Zambia was currently at its lowest.

“The prime objective is to build the new team with a goal of qualifying for the world cup. I will not lose my job if we did not qualify for the world cup,” Nyirenda said.

“Building a new team could even take three years. Qualifying to the World Cup will be a bonus, but we will qualify as we have 12 points to fight for,” he added.

With Zambia’s next competitive game scheduledfor August, Nyirenda said he is targeting to play at least three friendly international games on the two upcoming Fifa days.

Zambia lie in third position on the log in the World Cup qualifying group after losing to Nigeria at home drawing away against Cameroon.

  1. Here we go again, same mentality as Janza. what’s wrong with current prayers? Lwandamina left a good team, and all he gets is insults that there is no team.
My Zambia bwafya… Even in soccer no vision. Whoever hired him should give him World Cup qualifier or get sucked before even playing a game.

    • I am not supporting Wada but I am so disappointed at level of our reading in between the lines, even my Grade 5 child can see that in his statement there is a vision spelled out “to build the new team with a goal of qualifying for the world cup” not 2018 only, the problem in Zambia is anxiety, we want “ifintu ni bwangu fix” for once let us concentrate on the development not quick results believe you me 10 years from now we will be singing the same song if employ this syndrome. The best example of ifintu ni bwangu countries is England. Look at Spain they did their home work and built a formidable side which will ever be remembered.

  2. I agree with Wada that we dont have a team. When a team is in place, you have a known starting 11 even before the game starts. Who is our right back? Who is our left back? Who is Sunzu’s partner? Who is Mbesuma’s partner? We dont have a team and thats why we keep changing players in each game. We need a stable team that has gelled coz they have been playing together for some time. In 2012, we knew the starting 11 long before the game: Mweene, Nkausu, Musonda Joseph, Hichani, Sunzu, Sinkala, Chisamba, Chansa, Mayuka, Katongo C and Kalaba. We dont have a team yet, I agree with Wada.

    • Every target must be realistic and measurable but your target is not realistic as it lack realistic tools for development of soccer.

  3. I dont have a lot to speak but how just giv thanx to the curent FAZ if once wada wada offered a contract bcoz it is the most important type of motivation for a coach. Take for instance wen the houce is finished were the caretaker is saving his life, he has to move on & look for another unfinished building, same applise to patrice, janza & Lwandamina there was no security such as contract form to safeguard their jobs at national team. Evn i personally working without any signing document better to start running my own kantemba, so think if its you. Remember Lwandamina use to respect were he had contract at zesco fc than national team reason is already known simple.

  4. Zambia u have the players, remember ur team played Nigeria very well in Ndola, ur team almost equalised the goal Iwobi and Iheancho scored in second half… I thought cameroon will be a bonus to ur team but U went and fumbled in cameroon… Now Algeria are targeting good six point from Zambia

    • The man had a bad experience in the hands of Kalu. Team talk at half time was done for him against Chile so he resigned. Build and build. Pick the under 20s and under 23s, they wont win much – get fired then there will be someone to come and finish the job by qualifying to the next AFCON and the 48 member world cup. If you can maneuver since you can author you are an intellectual, you will find your way into the management at FAZ…then you can do the team talk against a world class team which you will organize to play a friendly against.

  5. Realism and taking notes from past local coaches experience tells me we are going completely nowhere with this coach. The tactical know how required for a coach to have success at major tournaments like Afcon and the world cup is beyond a coach like Wada. He is good but lets be realistic, his level of “good” still does not meet minimum requirement for a coach to succeed at a tournament like the world cup or even the Afcon. I don’t want to be the wet blanket in the argument but lets be real. Wada wouldn’t even be a star coach in the PSL.

  6. Big Steve how do u know a good coach good enough for PSL! i will tell u: One who is good enough to plot the fall of Amajita, OK? Wada is good enough for Chipos and will revolutionise the selection of players.

  7. The Wada Sunday interview, in English, revealed that the coach has hopes Chipos could make it for 2018 World cup. But it is a tough road. This clarification is for Afrikaans speakers like Steve 4rom RSA.

    • Don’t personalize sh!t here. Lets respect each others opinions. Just because we have a difference of opinion does not give you the right to call me names. If I was just as shallow I would reciprocate but I’m not.

  8. I think Mr Nyirenda has a tough task ahead of him . We are third in the group . I fully expected us to be last and get thrashed home and away …so far .. not bad…

  9. I still believe Wada is a good coach.Yes he does not want to rise hopes to qualify for wc.Zambia is still in the building phase. The coach has indicated clearly that he wouldn’t loss his job even though Zambia fail to qualify. this statement is wrong Wada needs to apply a positive approach, for players and fans to have faith in him.

  10. Thanks FAZ.Wada, time to work now no more excuses.Spread your net when it comes to national team selection. The era of selecting based on past performance should not be entertained sir.I hope the mandate to decide who joins the team has been given to you and its part of your contract.

  11. Wada is good coach at club. Level pa zed,lts b realistic how many local coaches lose focus and game plann when it matter most, that’s why faz doesn’t give them a contruct, they caant read the game in competitive matches ,we better of with an expatrait coach….give wada 10 official matches ,everyone will be calling for his blood(suck)

    • STOP WORRYING ABOURT KALU’S SHADOW ZAMBIAN COACH. HE ALMOST WANTED TO SAY HIS ELDER BROTHER STONE NYIRENDA WAS A BETTER PLAYER THAN KALU AND THEY WHERE NOT GOOD FRIENDS…JUST DO YOUR THING…I HEARD YOU TALK ABOUT FAST ZAMBIAN FOOTBALL…THAT’S THE KIND OF PLAYERS YOU WILL EMPLOY IN EVERY TEAM YOU SELECT OR YOU WILL BE EXHIBITING DOUBLE STANDARDS.

  13. @ Tatu saad….. be positive. After the Sunday interview, chipo fans b ready, we r in for good times guys! happy days r here again!

  14. The nucleus of the team was supposed to come out of the 2012 Afcon team …the African Champions. ..a thorough FA would have done their homework from where Hevre Reward left off.
I can excuse 2014 but by 2018 Zambia should entertain a first World Cup Qualification! If you look at Angola And Togo. They have been to a World Cup. I can add Senegal and even South Africa…Ghana.and Nigeria and Ivory Coast. Seriously is Togo more ready for a World Cup than Zambia?

Zambia who have been to three Africa Cup finals? And have won it one out of three finals appearances.
We need to switch that negative mentality. Today not in one or two or ten years!

  15. For me qualifications in this modern age count for a lot. what papers does wada have ? I think its caf fimofimo. I would set the standard at uefa b as the minimum. Hence the future is in coaches like Chris Kaunda, kelvin Kaindu ( isuspect he has completed it by now ) otherwise abena wada ni stop gap measure. but what he misseout on paper, he makes up with enthusiasm and discipline.he can therefore surprise us because of these qualities (I hope )
