Power Dynamos – 2017 squad shape and composition

By Kondwani Gondwe

The 2017 Season is around a month from a kick off which means most teams could be about done with recruitment, trimming of their squads and preseason training.

For Power Dynamos, the preseason preparations will include friendly games with some of Zimbabwe’s finest teams when they travel there in the first week of March. The fixtures on the cards are said to include Chicken Inn and FC Platinum.

The Goalkeepers

With the experience of 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winning goalkeeper Joshua Titima challenging for a spot in goal with one of the brightest goalkeeping talents of the 2016 season, Allan Chibwe the squad looks secure with the options for position number one. Dominic Nzala and Peter Ndhlovu are the other options.

The Attack

Power seem to be on the verge of re-signing Alex ‘Bazo’ Ng’onga, the prolific forward who left the Arthur Davis for Mounana in Gabon at the start of the 2015 season and went on to play a part in Mounana’s title winning run in their 2015/16 League.

Who wouldn’t want a squad with numerous options?  The depth of striking options plays right into my idea of a great squad seeing as our front line now has a wealth of forward options from Fwayo Tembo, Jimmy Ndlhovu, Martin Phiri, Martin Kayuwa, Lyson Sikaonga, Luka Lungu and now imminently Alex Ng’onga to add to that list.

Perhaps this could also allow for front lines that are more fluid and use space as is the case with an attack line of 3 with a midfield of 3.

The Defense

With the capture of Allan Kamwanga Jr the right back position will be one to be fought for over the season. Central defense may be the only short looking area of the current Power Dynamos Squad list even after the capture of 2012 Africa Cup winning center half Hichani Himonde, who’s stature, experience and quality would have one believe he will be the first defender on the team sheet come the start of the season.

With nominally 4 center backs in Mwanambaba, Kasonde, Mutale and Himonde could Stepen Kunda be the man who takes the squad role of now retired Emmanuel Chimpinde?

The Midfield

Could all be set between Benson Sakala and Victor Kashitu for defensive midfielders?

One would doubt the depth there but we have seen Francis Kasonde play in that role in the past so perhaps one may not want to read too much into the situation.

For central attacking midfielders Power have added Godfrey Ngwenya to the options of Larry Bwalya and Gozon Mutale while Laurent Muma will continue with forest rangers on loan.

Ngwenya is a pretty good option, he showed glimpses of what he can do in the past season at Kabwe Warriors which include his silky ability on the ball, more than a decent first touch and has a bit of a zip about him when he plays.

That ability to drift away from the first marker with the ball at his feet will be a great weapon against teams that sit deep. Godfrey is widely regarded as an option who will be a great weapon to have when Power Dynamos want to execute some fast passing attacking play.

The wide Areas

The most stocked area could be the wide areas with Kennedy Mudenda and Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba commanding starting roles while Kingsley Mukuka, Ferdinand Olle Kam and Julius Situmbeko have a hell of a fight to work their way into the team.

Power recently announced that Michael Banda, a quick and skillful winger, has joined from Sharp Keys Academy on a permanent basis, slightly away from the trend of only securing loan deals from academies.

Mike played at Nampundwe during the 2016 season in Central Province. Another option could be Fwayo who has played there before and could be really dangerous there too.

All said, Power have a really top heavy side whose depth is in the wide areas and should realistically not lack goals with such a wide variety of partnerships/trios or lone options.

It’s now really just up to coach Danny Kabwe to devise winning formulas for each game.

Power Dynamos have all the necessary materials to contend for a continental position this season.

  1. No players of note have arrived at Power it wud seem! One gets the gut feeling they will struggle, again, to keep pace with the top three teams. They hv the resources but their recruitment policy reminds one of the Zesco of old; half hearted approach and penny pinching while hoping against hope the average squad assembled will deliver!

  2. I think Team is just fine, which players are out there to get, good ones are at ZESCO, NKANA, ZANACO and that’s not easy.

Its like real Madrid buying Messi, or Aguero going to Chelsea. These transfers are impossibe.

We have a good squad, a good coach, if we can keep Fwayo playing and re-sign Ngonga, we can be Top two

  3. But power dynamos seem to have a good team than zanaco they have the weaith of exprience in fwayo tembo hichani himonde and francis kasonda they just need one or two players in they squared I think alex ngonga will be the good addition by the way where is mukuka mulenga is he still at sundown? any one with the information

  4. power 90* all the way n i see we have a team this year but how only miss partsob daka but its good to see fwayo playing for my team much love for him n any one with the news about or when the league will kick off.but the league has to start before face we face algeria
