OWINO URGES FANS TO TURN UP IN NUMBERS AS HE DECLARES ZESCO READY FOR BATTLE
Zesco United defender David Owino Odhiambo believes Zesco United are ready to face Kaizer Chiefs in the first leg of the CAF confederation Cup pre-group stage round at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Sunday.
Odhiambo told the ZamFoot crew in an exclusive interview that the team was ready and Sunday will just be like any other day.
“The team is ready just just like any other day we can only hope for the best come Sunday,” he said.
The Kenyan defender has urged the fans to troop to the Stadium in numbers and cheer their team to victory.
“To the fans, I just urge them to turn up in large numbers to support the boys trusting and hoping we carry the day,” he said.
Kaizer Chiefs will be Zesco United’s third South African opponent in the last four years. In 2016 they were eliminated from the CAF Champions League at the semi-final stage by Mamelodi Sundowns while a year later it was Supersport United who eliminated the Ndola based out-fit from the CAF confederation Cup at the quarter final stage.
After a barren draw at the Lucas Masterpiece Moripe Stadium, Zesco United needed an outright win to eliminate Matsatsatsa and they took only four minutes to take the lead through John Ching’andu.
Thuso Phala equalised 10 minutes to half time. Zesco United went ahead again six minutes into the second half thanks to David Owino but Phala stole the show in the dying minutes completing his brace to break Zesco United faithfuls hearts.
Owino remembers the match and admits that he was very disappointed as he never wants to lose a match be it a friendly or official match.
“Personally i felt disappointed because I am a kind of player who does not like losing – whether in friendly or official matches. The reason being that I want to give back for trust the coach and his technical team have shown in me giving me the node to start the game. Then again football has three results so we take positively what has come our way and build on it,” he said.
” I don’t think South African teams have been a stumbling block to Zesco, I just feel it’s just luck that was not on our side the times we played them. If you can recall the two opponents we have played against, we beat Sundowns at home only to lose to them on goal defference. The same scenario happend against Supersport,” he added.
Zesco United will host PSL giants Kaizer Chiefs in a crunchy encounter at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Sunday, January 13th 2018.
Odhiambo, Jesse Were and Lazarus Kambole are expected to feature for Zesco United as they will hope to lead the Zambian Champions to the group stage.
