Munyao, Chepeshi, Mkandawire make 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup squad

Zambia national football team coach George Lwandamina has named a provisional squad of 22 players for the 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup competition which takes place in Namibia from 11th to 25th June.

Lwandamina has mainly stuck with the team that reached the quarter finals at the Rwanda 2016 CHAN tournament earlier in the year but has omitted veterans Christopher Katongo and Isaac Chansa from the squad.

Festus Mbewe and Paul Katema who missed the CHAN tournament after they went for military training will replace the two.

Young full backs Boyd Mkandawire and Benedict Chepeshi have bounced back to the squad at the expense of Stephen Kabamba and Solomon Sakala while Cosafa 2013 goalkeeper of the tournament Danny Munyao also returns to the team after missing the CHAN tournament to replace Lawrence Mulenga who has been confined to the bench at Kabwe Warriors.

Young speedy Zanaco winger Charles Zulu has also reclaimed his spot in the team with Zesco’s old guard Mwape Mwelwa falling off the list.

At last year’s tournament former Chipolopolo coach Honour Janza named seven foreign based players in his team that competed at the Cosafa tournament which saw Zambia lose at the quarter final stage.

Team Manager Stanley Kaseko who announced the team said the players were expected to arrive in Ndola on April 24.

Kaseko said the training program was part of the national team’s preparations ahead of the Cosafa Castle Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations qualification match against Guinea Bissau in June.

Is festus mbewe a striker fit enough to be in the national team. Its clear we need foreigner for a coach so that favoritizm is done away with… People were blaming kalu, he’s gone but we are seeing the same poor selection of players. Patson daka

    • Ndashye says:

Poor selection of players, what criteria do they use to select players mwebantu kanshi. ninshi ni piki piki napikidoli, ba chicken be serious with the selection. What have u seen in Patson Kanshi you want him to improve at national level whilst he cant even make the first team at local. i would prefer u call Martin Phiri cause he plays far much better than pastson and infact he is the one who has relegated your poster boy to the bench. The midfield is full of defensive players, we dont have creativity, so are u telling me the zambian league hasnt got any attacking midfield (Jack Chirwa (Green Buffaloes), Donashano Malama (Nkana), Benson Sakala (Power Dynamos), Salulani Phiri (Zanaco), Paul Katema (Red Arrows) are defensive mids and the rest are wingers. It time we groomed an attacking midfield we r not short of one. we want transparency in the selection of players based on performance. we have good players in the league why do we keep on using the failed experiments Ba George you should start putting on specks.

  2. Egwugwu says:

This coach is very BELOW average.

  3. kensplash says:

It is very true we really need a foreign coach coz this kind of behavior will never go away. Kalu may have gone but he has players that he needs to sale hence he will still make sure that those players at least meet a certain number of national team caps for them to have any chance of breaking into European leagues.”KALU’S HAND IS VERY LONG”.one cannot tell me that Patson is better than Walter Bwalya. Is Mkandawire better than Fackson Kapumbu or Lawrence Chungu? What has Patson Daka done for Lwandamina? WE NEED A NEUTRAL COACH.

    • Wasp says:

Why should you still blame Kalu?!? You wanted him out, now you want to accuse him of still having a hand in selection?

Your heart is just full of hatred, petty jealousy and you’re probably just ignorant of the fact that he’ll forever be better than you. Leave Kalu alone!

    • Bolapazed says:

It’s a very useless argument! Give me water to cool my heat. What kind of thinking is this? Kalu is gone and if the people around still want to use him as an excuse then you will not progress. I’m afraid this term might end in witch hunt and justifications. Leave the Kalu ghost and work hard to fulfill the promises. We don’t want excuses for this admin’s failure to perform. 1.Africa Cup qualification. 2. World Cup Qualification. 3. COSAFA cup 4. National team sponsorship. 5. League cup sponsors. 6. Efficient and Transparent administration systems.

  4. CRESPO says:

    George can’t have 2 contracts – Kamanga
FAZ president Andrew Kamanga says the football body cannot offer Chipolopolo coach George Lwandamina a contract when he has another running contract with Zesco United as the club’s head coach.
Kamanga (right) said FAZ had engaged the club on Lwandamina’s dual roles and both parties agreed that he would only be attached to the national team on secondment because he was an employee of Zesco.
“He [Lwandamina] has a running contract at Zesco and under the laws of our country, one cannot sign two contracts [and] so his allegiance is to the club. He will only be the national team coach during camping,” he said.
And Kamanga said FAZ was happy with the status quo and would keep Lwandamina under the same agreement on which he was engaged as national team coach.
“We have just been in office and we can’t start overhauling the whole process. The national team has got a tight schedule this year and we don’t want to disturb that. So the current status quo remains,” Kamanga said.
He said FAZ could not engage a national team coach before receiving a go-ahead from the government.
“We cannot go ahead and a hire a coach because we wait upon government who pay the coach. We are still in consultation with the Ministry of Sport and once we get the confirmation, we shall hire a coach,” said Kamanga.
Lwandamina has been interim Chipolopolo coach since June last year.

This is the guy who spent his lifetime blaming kalu for not giving Lwandamina a contract. What happened to the idea of selling replica jerseys and gate takings to hire an expatriate?Reality dawning!

    • Bolapazed says:

All they wanted was power and now that they have it, they are confused, they don’y know what to do. It’s like they didn’t believe they had won.

Meanwhile, plenty of work to do and the clock is ticking.

      • Amos Mumba says:

Zambian are best known for destroying themselves. The guy is even proposing a third term limit in the constitution when he and his supporters did not want Kalu to even go for a third term attempt. We want to see quality friendlies before we tackle Kenya and Guinea and not ukuwayawaya!

  8. Billy says:

I still do not understand why Lwandamina is so in love with useless players. I was expecting to see Chris Munthali, Walter Bwalya or other current good players in the ZPL, only to call known flops like Adamson Mulawo, Festus Mbewe, Patson Daka, Chepeshi, Chirwa and Mkandawire. Katwishi mwe. We even used to blame innocent Kalusha for this. Little did we know that it was Lwandamina the main culprit in team selection.

  9. Soccerguru says:

But Zamfoot u are useless…..an icon of Zambian Football. ….Solly Pandor dies…and everyone has reported it except you. Very useless ….very very disappointing. ….atase. ….busy spending time slandering Kalu. …ba koswe

  10. Billy says:

The answer to our this useless and appalling team selection is a foreign-based coach. With Lwandamina, Zambia soccer team is going nowhere.

  11. Some people here use to insult kalu because of team selection know you have seen that he was innocent we have a lot of good players in the league like ziyo tembo, walter bwalya fackson kapumbu these are the players who deserve to be in the national team

  12. By the way has faz put in place the program for our national team? I mean were is faz going to camp the national team is it in south african, locally or europe?how many friendlies has faz arranged to play against zambia mr kamanga these are the things that we want to hear from you because the game against guinea bissau is very crucial we want zambia to qualify to the afcon probably been the champion again

  13. Countries like zimbabwe nigeria Rwanda uganda have announced they friendly games yet here in zambia the only things we are now hearing is cosafa,mr kamanga during your campens you promise us of organizing quality friendlies for the national team so fulfill your promises

  14. Anita says:

AS Vita have just qualified beat Sundowns on away goal rule.

  15. Elvis says:

  16. kazembe says:

Chepeshi is not swift.Where are the following: Moses Phiri, Bruce Musakanya and Bromsom Chama? Kazembe S, Lubwe, Samfya.

  17. Mambwe ZimaNdola says:

Thr we go again….our beloved patson is back with poor old festus. This walter bwalya guy has been bangin goals every weekend sure deserves a call up and young jacob ngulube as well. Am now convinced Chicken is attracted 2 non-perfomers. ‘Wen u attract ugly chicks u’ll always be attracted 2 them’. Our target is 2 win the cosafa nothin less, let’s b serious uncle G.

  18. slys says:

Provisisional squad.Does it make sense to skin him for calling these guys to the provisional squad? Walter will come in with the big guys. The first group call up is meant to be assessed for possible inclusion to the final one.

  19. General says:

useless team selection Namibia will beat us again.

  20. Super world says:

I like the way that Nkwazi captain plays.why can’t he be tried as well? Simon Bwalya(Nkana) Julious Situmbeko (power)

  21. Sibs says:

F.Mbewe, P.Daka, Chipeshi, Mkandawire we have seen what these guys can do. And J.Chirwa is not national team material i’m sorry to say this. We have stopped choosing players based on skill and ability. Please let other players also get a chance.
I agree with most of the guys team selection is bad.

  22. Anonymous says:

Without commenting on the line up. I’m just of the view that another coach could have handled COSAFA, Ba “Chicken” has too much on his hands – ZESCO ku Champions League and ZPL and Chipolopolo

  23. man JOSE says:

    Stats…premier league leaders
    Nkana. 16 points——1stposition

CHIPOLOPOLO coach George Lwandamina has distanced himself from the COSAFA Cup team list released by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ).
Lwandamina said in an interview yesterday that the list of the team he named and forwarded to FAZ was not for the COSAFA tournament but for the routine one-week assessment camp meant to check the progress of players.
He also wondered why some players had been removed from the list he drafted.
Lwandamina said the technical bench had not yet come up with a list of the team for the COSAFA Cup and would only do so after checking a good number of players from the local ‘assessment’ camp.
“That list is not for the COSAFA Cup. I called the team which went to Rwanda (for the CHAN tournament) for assessment. It has been routine for a long time.
“Then if there will be any inclusions or subtractions, that will come later. So players should continue working extra hard,” said Lwandamina.
He said the communication from FAZ on the one-week assessment camp was not correct because selection of players for the COSAFA Cup and also the Africa Cup qualifier against Guinea Bissau in June will only be done after assessing the local players.
Chipolopolo team manager Stanley Kaseko on Tuesday released a 22-man team to start preparing for the June COSAFA Cup.
The list released by Kaseko saw veterans Isaac Chansa and Christopher Katongo as well Christopher Munthali and Mwape Mwelwa missing from the team despite being part of the CHAN tournament.
“And there are players who have been removed from the list, I don’t know who removed them.
“The players should just continue working harder, the assessment process is a continuous one and we haven’t selected a team for any match yet,” Lwandamina said.
And FAZ president Andrew Kamanga has described the death of former Chipolopolo team manager Solly Pandor as a big blow to the football fraternity in the country.
Speaking at Pandor’s funeral on Wednesday evening, Kamanga said Pandor was a dedicated servant of the game and a manager whose service had left an indelible
    mark on Zambian football.

We know ZAMFOOT cannot bring such issues on this forum because they are compromised since its ONLY KALU who was a TAKATAKA!We shall feed you the same pill you gave others!
“We are profoundly saddened by the death of Pandor because the success and management of the national team we see today is partly because of the foundations laid by this dedicated son of the game,” Kamanga said.
Pandor died in the early hours of Wednesday and was buried the same day at the Leopards Hill cemetery after prayers at the Burma Road Mosque.
And Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) board member Haroon Ghumra, who knew Pandor for more than 30 years, said the late former team manager was instrumental in the improvement of football in the country.
“We worked together for over 20 years when we were board members at LICEF School and he was instrumental in the improvement of sports at the school,” he said.

  25. PAPA GAME says:
