Lwandamina – Zesco not at their best despite win in Niger
ZESCO United coach George Lwandamina says his lads where not in their best form when they beat Niger’s Sonidep 2-1 in the 1st leg of the 2018-19 Total CAF Champions league preliminary round away on Tuesday.
Speaking in Niger after the game, Lwandamina said his players were not at their best as they did not have enough preparatory time. CAF changed this season’s clubs continental football calendar – of which has apparently inconvenienced the teams.
The Zesco coach said beating Sonidep was just a bonus. He also emphasized on the point that there are no shortcuts in football in reference to preparations.
“Like I said before leaving home. There are no shortcuts in football, Lwandamina said”.
“We were just a few weeks in our preparations and we made this trip here and if you saw how the boys started,….. definitely they never even played a test match. But they were trying to fix it here, fix it there. And in the second half they came into the game, they peaked”.
“Still they were not at their best. Winning this game is just a bonus. I emphasize, there are no shortcuts in football,” he said.
And Lwandamina dissuaded that this victory – despite his players not in their best form – shows the strength of Zesco United. He stated that their opponents were just ‘wet behind the ears’.
Zesco opened the scoring through new signing Rahim Osmanu before Sonidep equalized. And later Lazarus Kambole netted the match winning goal.
