What did the Kopala derby teach us?
On Saturday, Kitwe came to a stand still as Power Dynamos took on 12 time Super League champions Nkana. The derby which
is popularly known as the Kopala derby is arguably the biggest local derby in the land.
Granted, there was hype before the match from many stake holders and a lot of banter among fans but Nkana ultimately claimed the supremacy and bragging rights to the City of Kitwe for the weekend atleast as Walter Bwalya finished off a Ronald Kampamba pass to win Nkana their first Kopala derby in five games.
HERE IS WHAT WE LEARNT
The match is big – If you caught the match on TV or was in the stadium am sure you saw the huge crowd that this match attracted. Both Nkana and Power Dynamos fans came out in numbers to support their teams.
Nkana still has the biggest fan base– Forget Facebook polls Nkana clearly outnumbered Power Dynamos at Arthur Davies stadium. Of late their has been questions on who has the biggest fan base but am sure the derby attendance will put this to rest for now.
Action on the pitch keeps getting better– The match on Saturday saw end to end stuff with both Nkana and Power Dynamos attacking and playing free flowing football. Their is room for improvement but as at now the match and the league are on the right path.
Ronald Kampamba is still class– The two time golden boot winner was introduced in the second half to mark his return from injury after nearly two months on the sidelines.
Kampamba wasted no time to make a mark on the match as he assited Walter Bwalya for the only goal of the game. If there was any doubt on how intelligent he is, His performance in the Kopala derby answered all the questions.
Power Dynamos need Martin Phiri more than they Know it – Power Dynamos fans, atleast most of whom I have interacted with don’t hold Martin in high regard, but let’s face it he might be their best striker at the monent.
Luka Lungu – well age is catching up and they might need to reduce their reliance on him. Alex Ng’onga is an exceptional striker who scores more long range shots as he misses tap-ins, Jimmy Ndhlovu is another great striker but gets injured way to many times .
Martin has great runs and can finish off chances . He is fairly quick and has the ability to become a better player but all that depends on Dan Kabwe trusting him and giving him the leading role.
In the derby it showed how much they missed the two goal hero of the first leg of this derby.
