Kennedy Mweene keeps another clean sheet for Sundowns

Kennedy Mweene kept another clean sheet after returning to the Mamelodi Sundowns starting line-up to help the Brazilians to an emphatic 3 – 0 win over Mwape Musonda’s Black Leopards in midweek.

Mweene was making his third start after the turn of the year having played in the league against Kaizer Chiefs and away in the CAF Champions League against Lobi Stars of Nigeria.

Mweene was decisive in the opening minutes when he dived well to his right to stop a ferocious shot from red hot striker Musonda in the 5th minute.

Sundowns went on to score three goals through Maboe, Ricardo and an own goal from Masia.

Musonda, the PSL’s current top scorer with 8 goals was substituted in the 79th minute of the game.

The Chipolopolo skipper has made only 5 starts for Sundowns this season in 17 games played in the league as he plays second fiddle to injured Dennis Onyango.

He has only conceded once in so far in the win against Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns have not lost in all the league games he has played.

Its time this man moved to another team which he will feature frequently. Goal stoppers retire in their eargly 40s . He has some years to stand in the goal post

No one will pay him the salary he earns at Sundown’s and additionally he has nothing more to prove, he is still Zambia national team No.1, he still gets some game time at arguably the biggest club in Africa, he is still captain of the national team, age is not really on his side so why spoil a good thing. If he moves to a club that plays him regularly but has a weak defense and he concedes more goals, us the same Zambians will begin to vilify him which will probably lead to him losing his no. spot in the national team and on top of that if he moves, even to a smaller league in Europe he will need to take a pay cut. So what would the point have been. At this stage in his career Id advise him to stay at Sundowns unless China or Qatar or something like that comes knocking.

Good points Steve. Kennedy is well paid at Sundowns. Currently i don’t see any S.A team matching his pay check except of K.Chiefs or O.Pirates but both these teams are not in need of a Goal keeper.

I understand your point.Kennedy Should hope and pray he gets club from either China or Qatar. Again its a huge challenge for him to relocate because of his family. It will not be easy for his children to begin whole over again in school. Other wise the guy is one of the best in SA or Africa. You could see from his performance whenever he is called. Its not easy in any sport to perform at your best if you are not regularly featuring.

Very good discussion, gentlemen! As a professor I witness many debates, and they usually do not end so productively. I think that Mweene and Sunzu can anchor the defense for Chipolopolo for 3 or 4 more years. They should get back to the Africa Cup again, and perhaps even the World Cup with young guns such as Mwepu and Daka and Musonda. On a separate note, is there any update on Mayuka’s trial with the squad from northern Europe (I think it was Denmark)?
