Jani Sikazwe walks away with Cosafa Cup gold medal

Zambian referee Jani Sikazwe continues to raise his profile on the continent after he successfully handled the final of the 2016 regional Cosafa Castle Cup tournament between South Africa and Botswana.

Sikazwe who has been consistent at the Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and CAF games stumped his name as the top ‘whistle-man’ in the region when he was named as the centre man for the game which saw South Africa crowned champions with a 3 – 2 victory.

South Africa grabbed a fourth COSAFA Castle Cup title with a tense victory over Botswana in the final played at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia on Saturday.

Gift Motupa scored two penalties for South Africa to go with a further strike from Thabiso Kutumela as coach Shakes Mashaba’s side joined Zambia and Zimbabwe on four title wins each at the top of the all-time table.

It was unlucky for Botswana, who had a fine tournament but missed out on a first major trophy.

Onkabetse Makgantai and Kabelo Seakanyeng netted for Botswana as they first took the lead and then equalised at 2-2, but could not grab what would have been a famous win.

It looked as though the game was headed for a penalty shoot-out until Joel Mogorosi was adjudged to have handled in the box and Motupa scored his second penalty of the night.

Earlier, Swaziland claimed the bronze medal for the third time in their history after 1999 and 2002 with a deserved 1-0 success over guest nation DR Congo.

  1. Thanks for raising the flag high for Zambia even in these times when our soccer has just hit bottom of the football barrel.

On another note Lewis Macha has signed a three year deal with Kaiser Chiefs. Hope he also raises the flag high for Zambia in the PSL.

  2. The Referee Jan Sikazwe was a disgrace in the COSAFA final.YOU can not give 2 questionable penalties in the final.its not every ball which gets contact with the ball in the 18 area which is given as a penalty.@SLY , How many games at high level have you not seen a similar situation were the Ref waves play on.Telling the players He has seen it but not worthy the penalty .

  3. He killed Botswana for sure with his bias blowing of the whistle. He red carded the Botswana coach in the first game,so he killed them twice.
