HOME GAMES KEY FOR ZESCO’S PASSAGE AFTER BEEN DRAWN MAZEMBE AND AGOSTO
Zesco United were drawn in group A alongside Congo giant TP Mazembe, Angolan Premeiro de Agosto and the winner between Egyptian Zamalek and Senegalese Generation Foot, whose match was abandoned after a decision to prematurely rescheduling the venue and that led the Generation Foot contingent into protesting.
The Ndola based side secured a spot amongst the giants of African football after beating eSwatini side Green Mamba FC on aggregate 3-nil in the first round of the preliminaries. In the second round, Zesco United ran out victorious after beating Tanzanian Young Africans 3-2 on aggregate.
TP Mazembe who are one of the favorite to go through, played their first competitive match against a Zambia club last year when they played Zesco United in the second round of the Preliminaries. Jackson Muleka’s 19th minute strike at the Stade TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi was enough to hand Mazembe a win.
The return leg at Levy Mwanawasa stadium in Ndola, the Ravens managed to salvage 1-1 draw and Zesco United dropped into the Confederation Cup.
On the paper Zamalek looks like a team which will join the other three teams, while Premeiro de Agosto will be a familiar team to many in the country, they managed to eliminate Green Eagles into the Confederation Cup some weeks ago, they won’t be a pushover.
Home matches are key if Zesco United is to progress to the next round, they should win all their matches played in front of their supporters. Team Ya Ziko (the team for the whole nation) as they are known have had challenges when it comes to winning home matches in the competition.
Otherwise, every team in this group stands an equal chance of progressing, it all comes down to who applis themselves well on the match day.
