Home Affairs minister summon Kalampa, Zesco fans over unruly behaviour

Government has condemned the unruly behavior exhibited by Nkana and Zesco soccer fans during the week 24 fixture played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo says government will not allow any form of hooliganism to dent the image of the country as a beacon of peace.

Mr. Kampyongo disclosed to ZANIS in Lusaka that he has since instructed the commissioner of Police on the Copperbelt to summon both managers from the two clubs.

He urged FAZ to work with the law enforcement officers under his ministry to insure that perpetrators of this vice are brought to book.

He said soccer is a unifying sport and wondered why soccer fans resorted to indulge in behavior that doesn’t promote the spirit of fair play.

There were shameful scenes at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Friday evening when the fans took center stage and caused the match to be abandoned with the two teams tied 1 – 1.

The match lived up to its billing in terms of action on the pitch.

Zesco United settled quickly and they were unfortunate not to go ahead when Lazarous Kambole made a run to the right and crossed for Winstone Kalengo who fluffed his shot with only the keeper to beat.

As the first half wore on, Nkana were coming more into the game and it was not long before the prodigal son Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba’s cross from the right found Ronald ‘Sate Sate’ Kampamba who headed with accuracy in the 44th minute to give Nkana the lead.

Zesco pulled one back in the 65th minute when Lazarous Kambole reacted first to a loose ball in the 6 yard box to shoot home from close range.

However scenes turned ugly when Nkana fans started throwing missiles onto the pitch after substitute Idriss Mbombo disputed a decision by the referee and Nkana fans by this time were feeling the referee was not blowing in their favor.

The match was stopped for about 7 minutes after the 81st minute but resumed once calm had been restored.

To everyone’s surprise, the referee only added 3 minute of stoppage time and just after the board was raised to indicate the stoppage time, Nkana were rightfully awarded a penalty after Marcel Kalonda used his hand to deny Mbombo a clear header on goal.

This time it was the Zesco fans who threw missiles onto the pitch incessantly causing the match to be abandoned after referee Wiseman Musako and the other officials waited for over 15 minutes.

The match will now be decided in the boardroom.

Nkana have already benefited twice with decisions in the boardroom.

Below is how the events unfolded at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Friday the 13th.
