Glo CAF Awards: Mahrez is 2016 African footballer of the year

Algerian midfielder Riyad Mahrez has been named 2016 African player of the year.

Mahrez who plays for English champions Leicester scooped the prestigious title ahead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon who was first runner and Saido Mane of Senegal.

Others who walked away with awards include Pitso Mosimane who was named coach of he year as well as Nigeria’s rising stars Iheanacho and Iwobi.

8. Referee of the Year – Bakary Papa Gasama

African Legend’s Award:

1. Emilienne Mbango (Former Cameroon Player)

2. Laurent Pokou (Former Cote d’Ivoire Player)

African Player of the Year – Based in Africa

1. Dennis Onyango – Winner (252 votes)

2. Khama Billiat – Runner-Up (228 votes)

3. Rainford Kalaba  (206 votes)

African Player of the Year

1. Riyad Mahrez – Winner (361 votes)

2. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang – Runner-Up (313 votes)

3. Sadio Mane (186 votes)

    Kelechi Iheanacho was voted Africa’s most promising talent three year ago and he still gets the same accolade this year? Interesting.

    @Mwewa I didn’t know that’s what happened 3 years ago? CAF is like FIFA Under Sept Blatter.

    Riyad Mahrez definitely deserved the award. Great player. You can’t be the best player in England and fail to win it in Africa but I wouldn’t have been surprised if someone else got it. I can only happen in CAF
