Ghana overtaking South Africa as Zambia’s biggest rivals
The 2015 African Cup of Nations starts on 17th January, 2015 with Southern Africa powerhouse Zambia gunning for a second title in 3 years.
At every tournament, there are fixtures fans always look out for and it seems most Black Stars and Chipolopolo faithful can’t wait for the Zambia versus Ghana clash but unfortunately the two sides can only meet after the quarter finals stage.
Historically for bragging rights If there’s a match the Chipolopolo Boys can’t afford to lose, it is the Southern Africa derby against Bafana Bafana, but the match against Black Stars is turning out to be ‘The Grudge’ match.
In the last four competitive matches, Zambia has beaten Ghana three times and lost once but it is that AFCON 2012 semi final defeat inflicted by an Emmanuel Mayuka second strike that hasn’t gone to well in Accra and Kumasi as many felt Zambia denied the Black Stars a fifth AFCON title.
Though the Asamoah Gyan captained side got their revenge when they denied the Copperbullets the long awaited maiden appearance at the FIFA World Cup for the Brazil edition.
Teams are judged on how many trophies they win and when they did it, and that seems to be still haunting Ghana as their last AFCON title came about 2 decades ago in contrast to Zambia who claimed hers in 2012 though Ghana has won it four times.
With Zambia and Ghana placed in Group B and C respectively, the two countries can only meet coincidently in the semi finals or the final.
At the 1996 AFCON, Zambia beat Ghana in a 3rd/4th playoff courtesy of that Joe Bwalya thunderbolt. In terms of that tournament temperament, the Chipolopolo faithful will be hoping for that favour to continue
