Former Pirates winger: Look out for Shonga
Dikgang Mabalane, a former Orlando Pirates winger, has warned Bafana Bafana to look out for striker Justin Shonga when they face Zambia in the Four Nations tournament final today.
Shonga has shown glimpses of brilliance in the Pirates jersey this season, but has now swapped the black and white for the green jersey of his national team Chipolopolo, as they take on Stuart Baxter’s Bafana side.
Mabalane admits that he was not convinced by Shonga in the early stages of the early stages of the season, but the man who is nicknamed ‘Terminator’ sat up and took note of the Zambian’s ability when he scored the cracker in a 4-2 victory over Chippa United.
“Shonga is a revelation. It took me a while to realise this,” Mabalane admits.
“In the first few games he played we did not really see much of him. I started seeing his quality when he scored that goal against Chippa from that awkward angle. Every game since then you can see the quality in him. He has brought something different to Pirates. For me he is a player to watch, he understands the South African game.
“He is a very skillful player and deceptively quick. You’d think he is not a fast player because he plays upfront, but he is quick and he has skill. He is an unpredictable player. He is playing for his national team where he is probably most comfortable, so he will probably surprise our defenders.“
Bafana beat Angola 6-5 on penalties to book themselves a spot, while the Zambians had to overcome Zimbabwe 5-4 in a shootout.
The match will be played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium at 17h00.
