Forest Rangers showing intent ahead of 2019 season
Ndola based club Forest Rangers have showed a lot of intent heading into the 2019 transitional league following acquisitions if a number of new players.
In the recent past Forest Rangers have been known for grooming young talent and selling their key players after a season or two. However this time around they have gone all out and acquired some already made players.
NEW STRIKERS ACQUIRED
Last season Fole Malembe scored only 38 goals and their main striker upfront Kobe Chipeta only managed four strikes the whole season. Luckily young forward Damiano Kola stepped up with 6 and talented midfielder Austin Muwowo outscored everyone with seven goals despite joining the Ndola side midway through the season.
Heading into the new season Perry Mutapa has acquired two top strikers to increase his options. Peter Mwaangani who was National Assembly top goalscorer in thiwe shot stint in the Super League with nine goals is one of those who have joined.
The 26 year old striker is a typical target man who can hold play waiting for support. Another striker who has joined Forest is Ghanaian forward Zikiru Adams.
Adams made his name at Nchanga Rangers after he netted thirteen goals in fifteen games to help the Chingola out-fit survive relegation in 2017. He then made his move to Zesco United were he failed to tick despite his glorious start to the campaign with four goals in one CAF Champions league match.
Zikiru and Mwaangani will add value to the Forest strike force and leave Mutapa spoilt for choice.
ACQUISITION OF EXPERIENCE AND FLESH LEGS IN MIDFIELD
Rangers have acquired the services of 2012 AFCON winner Isaac Chansa following the expiration of his contract at Zanaco. Chansa may not the same player he was seven/ eight years ago but his experience will come in handy at Dola Hill.
He will give guidance and help psych young players during high school profile encounters should they lose their cool. Mutapa has also roped in U20 national team midfielder Benson Kolala.
The 18 year old was one of the stand out performers for the Junior Copper Bullets at the 2018 COSAFA U20. Kolala is an intelligent midfielder who will develop into a great player with proper guidance and nurturing.
Forest have not left the defence unattended
following the 39 goals they conceded last season. They have acquired Henry Besa from National Assembly, Cameroonian defender Yvan Mballa and Ugandan goalkeeper Mathias Kingonya.
RETAINED THEIR BEST PLAYER
Mainly known for let go of their best players, Forest Rangers have this time around managed to keep sensational midfielder Austin Muwowo. Muwowo joined Forest midway through the season but quickly established himself as a key member of the Rangers set up.
The Nkana on loan midfielder was headed for Buildcon but the Forest management managed to somehow convince Nkana to let them keep their top goalscorer and star midfielder.
WIN FOUR TEAM TOURNAMENT
Forest Rangers wewe crowned four team tournament champions after they collected seven points over the weekend. Kitwe United organised the tournament and invited the Ndola side together with Powerful Power dynamos and lower tier side Gomes.
Forest Rangers finished top of the group after they beat Gomes and Power dynamos and drew one all with the hosts. Power dynamos may have used a second string side but for Forest it will go a long way in boosting their confidence ahead of the 2019 season.
FINAL GROUP STANDINGS
1. FOREST RANGERS 7 POINTS
2. KITWE UTD 5 POINTS
3. GOMES FC 2 POINTS
4. POWER DYNAMOS 1 POINTS
Is Forest Rangers going to pull a surprise and finish in the top four? only time will tell.
