FAZ, MTN pen improved sponsorship deal

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and telecommunication giant MTN has unveiled an improved US$4.5 million United States dollars sponsorship package over three years.

During a joint press briefing at MTN Zambia Head Office, FAZ president Andrew Kamanga said that clubs would now get K200, 000 from the K7, 000 that some received in the previous package signalling a landmark improvement.

Kamanga also said that league winners will now walk away with K500, 000 prize money which marks a hundred percent increment.
The package has leaped to US$4.5 million United States dollars from the previous US$3 million.

“All participants in the MTN Super League are guaranteed a participating fee of K200, 000 compared to K7, 000 for the last finishers on the league previously. This presents a 2, 757% increase!” he said.
“The Association is particularly excited with MTN’s decision to increase its sponsorship package to US1.5 million per year with US$300, 000 being in kind.”

He added: “This new contract increases remuneration packages for all 20 Super League teams with the league champions guaranteed K500, 000 from K250, 000 which represents a 100% increase.”

And MTN Chief Executive Officer Charles Molapisi said that the headline sponsors of the league were happy to be associated with FAZ.

“Today, we are proud to be associated with the success scored by FAZ over the period of our strategic partnerships,” Molapisi said.

FAZ had a consultative meeting with Super Division clubs over the state of the deal that lapsed in December 2017.
Kamanga promised the clubs to have the deal renegotiated with improved terms.

  1. This is still garbage…$50,000 fro the winning team…this is a joke. The $4.5 should have been the annual sponsorship not over 3 years.

  2. K500,000 or $50, 000 is probably what it costs the teams that are participating in continental tournaments to fulfil one fixture away from home when you consider the cost of airfares, hotel accommodation and other logistics. What FAZ needs to do is to do away with this exclusive sponsorship deal and bring on board co-sponsors. ABSA are the main sponsors of the PSL but the sponsorship is not exclusive

    • Great point Papa. the exclusivity clause is what caused problems with Vodafone sponsoring City and renovating woodlands stadium. Bring others on board to pump more money into the league and the results will help struggling teams. Monze Swallows can’t afford to buy a bus and even if they won the league, they still wouldn’t because the purse money is very low.
