On this day last year-The day the dream team made history
This day in 2017 will go down in Zambia’s football history. It was a Wednesday and after the dream team had qualified to the round of 16 of the U20 World Cup, they faced their biggest test yet in Germany.
It was a Wednesday and the nation still came to a stand still with Evelyn Hone (in photos) the place I was watching from being one of the institutions of higher learning where students chose watching the game over attending class.
Back to the pre-match the nation was torn between the dream team faithfuls so to say who were expecting history to be made and some who were a bit skeptical and who can blame them standing between Zambia and a place in the quarter was Germany the world football super Power.
The Match, Germany took the lead through Philipp Ochs in the 37th minute with a beauty of a freekick. In the second half Zambia came back like a house on fire, KV Oostende midfielder Emmanuel Banda pulled Zambia level just five minutes into the second half.
Spartak Moskva II striker Fashion Sakala who had made himself a World Cup hot shot put Zambia in the lead with a fierce shot that left the Germany keeper clueless in the 67th minute after receiving a pass from Enock ‘Computer’ Mwepu.
Mwepu then finished a great Zambian counter attack with easy slotting home from close range after Patson Daka had put him through on goal in the 85th minute.
Zambia looked to have booked their place in the quarter finals but late goals from Suat Serdar and Jonas Arweiler ensured the game went to extra time.
In the extra time it was Zesco United young defender Shemmy Mayembe who scored the winner in the 107th minute as the Young copper bullets held on to qualify to the quarter finals for the first time in Zambia’s history.
Zambia burst into celebrations and Evelyn Hone was not left out with students singing and dancing in happiness during school hours but who could blame them the dream team had just made the impossible possible.
