Cosafa U20: Zambia eliminated from 2017 tournament
The Zambia U20 national team has been eliminated from the ongoing Mopani Copper Mines Cosafa Cup Championship being hosted in Zambia.
With one loss and a draw in the opening two matches, Numba Mumamba’s side was banking on a win against Swaziland on Monday in the final group game and favorable results from other groups.
But the fate for the young Chipolopolo was sealed before they even kick off with Swaziland after South Africa and Egypt won their group games against Mozambique and Mauritius respectively to both move to 6 points before the final showdown between the two in the final group match on Monday.
Only group winners in each of the three groups and the best second placed team will qualify to the semi-finals.
Zambia’s highest possible points tally is 4 points and but they cannot overtake Uganda who are on 4 points due to an inferior head to head record.
The defending champions lost 2 – 0 to Uganda before being held to a 0 – 0 draw by Malawi.
Zambia earlier this year won the U20 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
FAZ graduated the Africa Cup winning team which played at the FIFA World Cup together with their coach and have insisted that they have used the U17 team for this tournament to prepare for the more prestigious 2019 CAF U20 Africa Cup tournament which which will serve as a qualifier for the 2020 World Cup.
