Cosafa U17: Zambia wire Amajita to reach semi finals

The Zambia U17 men’s national soccer team booked a spot in the semifinals of the on-going Cosafa U17 championship after they beat South Africa 3 – 2 in their second game of the tournament.

Numba Mumamba made no changes to squad that started when his boys thumped Madagascar 7 – 1 in the opening group stage match.

Zambia raced into a 3-0 halftime lead on Sunday, thanks to an opener from Prince Mumba and a brace by the tournament’s leading scorer, Lameck Banda.

Mumba gave Zambia the lead in the 20th minute when he headed home an Andrew Phiri cross.

Banda who scored a hat-trick in the opening match against Madagascar then scored the second for Zambia six minutes later before he completed his brace in the 43rd minute.

The Amajimbos had a better second half and they rallied back to score two late goals in the 83rd and 88th minutes through Mothlalosi Nare.

Numba Mumamba’s side however held on to the end to confirm their spot in the semi finals.

They however still have a formality group stage game against Mozambique on Tuesday at 1500hrs.

Lameck Banda leads the top scorers chart on five goals with Martin Njobvu in second with three goals
