Zesco United have started their CAF Confederations Cup group stage campaign on a sound note with a 1 – 0 home win over Smouha of Egypt thanks to a Jesse Were lone goal.
Smouha looked content to defending in numbers right from the start and Zesco were struggling to break them down.
Zesco had little sight of goal with their best chance falling to Were after he picked a long throw from Fackson Kapumbu but his shot was off target.
In the second half, Mohareb saw his shot just kiss the cross bar after he had skinned Dauti Musekwa on the left.
John Chingandu showed calmness in the box when he dribbled past one defender but he saw his shot blocked by the elbow of defender Patrick Marlo for the referee to point to the spot.
Were stepped up to take the spot kick and he made no mistake easily beating the Smouha goalie in the 72nd minute.
Fackson Kapumbu saw his long range effort saved after that while Mbombo was well marshaled bu
Smouha were reduced to long range efforts as they fought back towards the end through Diawara though Zesco stood strong in defense.
