CAF U20 AFCON: Group Stage stats

With the group stage done at the ongoing Total CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations, the tournament statistics have been compiled.

Hosts Zambia, Guinea, South Africa and Senegal are in the semi finals, and have qualified for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in South Korea.

Mali is ranked 8th while Cameroon is 5th. Egypt and Sudan are 6th and 7th respectively.

In terms of goals scored, Zambia lead the pack as the best attacking side. Actually, Wednesday’s semi final will see the best attacking sides take each as Zambia and South Africa have scored 19 goals between them.

The worst defensive record has to be Mali after that collapse at Heroes Stadium which saw concede 6 goals against Zambia.

From the teams in the semi finals, South Africa have been porous at the back having allowed 6 goals while West African pair Guinea and Senegal, who meet at Levy Stadium in Ndola on Thursday night have shipped in 4 goals each.

Of the 168 players registered by the eight participating team, 32 (representing 17 per cent) ply their outside their countries of birth. Mali has the most with eight players, followed by Cameroon and Senegal with six players each, Zambia has five, three for Guinea and two each for Egypt and South Africa.
Otherhand, Sudan is the only team that paraded a predominantly home-based squad.

  1. Save for the Zambia demolishing of Mali, I would put them at #5, I do believe they have some quality individual players like Kiota, they are definately better than Sudan.

Good stats ZamFoot, but my only warning is that from this point (today) and forward those stats are history any of the 4 remaining teams can and are capable of winning the cap, Zambia played exceptionally well but South Africa has a bone to chew with us as they want to redeem themselves from those last loses they suffered at the hands of Junior Chipolopolo. Secondly, SA has a very good combination of this left winger who runs like is bottom is on fire and feeding the likes of Luther Singh and other midfield cohort of midfielder-cum-strikers. The only thing we can capitalise on is their defence which to me is way to spongy. By and large, we stand a big chance of sending Amajita back home via Oliver R. Tambo International Airport!
