CAF CL: Zanaco through to group stages as they dump Yanga out

Super League champions Zanaco have qualified to the lucrative group stage of the 2017 CAF Champions League tournament on away goals after playing to a goalless draw with Young Africa of Tanzania.

The Zambian champions proceeded on a 1 – 1 aggregate scoreline thand to a Kwame Attram away goal.

Numba Mumamba made on change to the starting XI bringing in U20 international Boyd Musonda for Richard Kasonde in midfield as Zimiseleni Moyo who covered in midfield in the away game won the right to start in the defensive midfield position.

Yanga looked more cohesive in their play in the first half building from the back and always looked a threat through Aubrey Chirwa and Simon Msuva.

Zanaco came close in the 36th minute when Moyo sent in a curling free kick from the right to the far angle but Deo Munishi in the Yanga goal was spot on when he tipped the ball out for a corner.

Zanaco started the second half on the front foot and they should have taken the lead two minutes after the restart when Augustine Mulenga ran at his marker on the left and squared the ball for Kwame Attram who picked it with his back on goal in the 6 yard box.

He had enough space to turn and once he did, he shot wide to miss what turned out to be the best chance of the game.

Three minutes later, the Ghanaian was again givenue sight of goal this time after another run into the box by Enerst Mbewe but he shot over the bar from near the penalty spot.

After that Zanaco were reduced to shots from range with Taonga Bwembya troubling the goalkeeper with his free kicks but both teams were failing to trouble the goalkeepers enough.

Justin Zulu thought he had won the tie for the visitors when he sneaked behind the defensive line on set piecebut his goal was ruled offside late on.

Congratulation ZANACO. One wonders why you offloaded 7 players when you knew you would be participating in the tough CL tournament.
That kind of over confidence may yet be your undoing, because these championships get tougher as you proceed further. Remember fatigue, injuries and the like will set in and deplete your team.
    Wish you well.

The 2017 CAF Champions League (officially the 2017 Total CAF Champions League for sponsorship reasons)[1] is the 53rd edition of Africa’s premier club football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and the 21st edition under the current CAF Champions League format.

Starting from this season, the group stage will be expanded from eight to 16 teams, divided into four groups of four.[2][3]According to these changes the total matches to be played in the tournament will increase by 16 matches due to the extra 8 teams involved in group stage.

The winners of the 2017 CAF Champions League will qualify as the CAF representative at the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, and also earn the right to play against the winners of the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup in the 2018 CAF Super Cup.[4] Mamelodi Sundowns are the defending champions.

  17. Kasama Boy says:

ZANACO is in the Group Stage now. Those that have lost will drop into the Confederation Cup, whose next winners will also move into the group stage.

  18. Kasama Boy says:

    Of the Confederations Cup.

  19. Kasama Boy says:

The route to entering the Group stage has been shortened because the Groups have now been expanded from eight teams(2 groups) to 16 teams (4 groups). CAF feels this will allow those clubs that continuously failed to reach and show case their mettle in the group stage will now have that chance. It also exposes more African players to the Championships. More teams will now access the US$550,000, which they can use this to invest and develop their pockets, owe sorry, their teams.
