CAF CL: Zanaco draws Ah Ahly, Coton Sport and Wydad Casablanca in group stage

Zambian champions Zanaco have been handed a tough group stage in the CAF Champions League that will see them play Egyptian giants Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca of Morroco and Coton Sport of Cameroun.

Zanaco were drawn in group D and they will play their first game away in Egypt against Al Ahly on 12th May.

With two trips to North Africa, the Numba Mumamba coached side will draw inspiration from Zesco United who had a similar group in the 2016 competition that saw them drawn against Al Ahly and Wydad Casablanca as well as Ivorian Side Asec Mimosas.

Zesco put up a sound performance in the competition to reach the semi finals of the tournament.

In what is a changed format of the champions league, should Zanaco emerge from the group, they will be looking out for opponents in group C which has champions Mamelodi Sundowns, AS Vita, St George and Esperance in the quarter finals.

  1. Logic says:

I fear fro Zanaco my team. They seem to have some good pieces in place but the technical bench leaves much to be desired. Such a big team needs a coach with some decent pedigree behind him. All the best

  3. Billy says:

I see Wydad Casablanca and Al Ahly qualifying to the semi-finals. There is nothing for Zanaco. They are out even before the ball is kicked. I am not impressed with their display of football.

  5. Billy I totally agree with you, ZANACO will be the wiping boys in this group. If the team that won the 2016 league was still there it could have done well.

Zanaco need to buy mid season break. Aquisition of Felix Nyaende from forest was smart. I wondered why others like my team Mighty hadnt gone for him – second highest top scorer !!!!

  13. davinho says:

futball is prayed on the pitch not on paper…al ahly and wydad are favorites but zanaco can cause an upset and reach quarter finals..go zanaco we are behind you

Easy group. Remember zanaco qualified with a skelton team. The house is now full. They have the potential to go beyond this group stage. The technical bench proved to you that they are technically good. They were deserted by a legion of players who left to seek for greener pastures but still they qualified to the group stage. This is a big achievement. Lets give them a chance
