CAF CL: Two injury time goals sink Zesco in Angola

Zesco United were beaten 2 – 1 by Primero de Agosto of Angola after conceding two injury time goals to leave their chances of making the quarter finals of the 2018 CAF Champions League bleak.

Zesco looked to be cruising to victory after John Chingandu put the Ndola based side ahead in the 67th minute but some unconvincing defending saw Zesco concede in the 90th minute and the 7th minute of stoppage time.

Agosto looked the more likely to score in the first half as they effectively used the wings with the George Lwandamina side struggling to defend the crosses.

Zesco’s best chance of the first half fell to Lazarous Kambole when he turned in the box to shoot but even his shot was tame.

After the restart, Zesco were the better side and were pressing the hosts.

Kambole and Chingandu linked up well in the 48th minute but Zambian striker was only denied by some good goal keeping as they showed real intent in attack.

But it was Agosto who came the closest to score when a well taken shot from outside the goal was too strong for Jacob Banda’s hands as it slipped through only to come off the upright in the 54th minute.

The goal came from a counter attack on the left led by Kambole who laid the ball for Chingandu on the edge of the box to shoot with accuracy past the goalkeeper.

With Zesco looking comfortable on the ball and playing to hold out for the win, a cross from the right was not defended and they were punished by the slightest of a back-heel touch by Geraldo for Agosto to equalize in the 90th minute.

The referee indicated 5 minutes of additional time but let the match play on into the 7th minute.

With Zesco under pressure, another cross from the right this time found unmarked Unge who headed home past Jacob Banda.

The loss leaves Zesco United at the bottom of group D with 2 points having failed to pick a win in 4 games.

The Angolan side moves into second position with 5 points with two games to play.

Etoile du Sahel who will play Mbabane Swallows later this evening lead the group on 7 points while Swallows are third on 4 points.

Two teams will qualify to the next round from each group.

  1. I never saw any delaying tactics, except annoying Neyma. Zesco & Zambia we tell you what delaying tactics kills pace and give others chance to think.

  2. Ba Jacob Banda likula!!! Ba captain ubukula filya so???? Even his facial expressions will tell you that he struggles with confidence. Ba Lwandamina nabo chimochine! He has never used that Zukiri boy ever since his return…and deliberately ignoring out Silengo who proved to be good enough for CCL football!

  3. Lwandamina was dumped out of the car champions league by township rollers of bistwana and you expect him to go far in these qualifiers so what else were zesco expecting

  4. Zesco have never looked convincing from the word go in the champions league. The team needs to be refreshed with young blood in main positions. Technically the road for Zesco has come to an end. Next time guys.

  5. This loss hate me so so much any way thats life time to move on Kunku and his clowns so pathetic and William shongwe Supersport management need to talk to him that as commentetor he needs not show to which team he is supporting soo immature

  6. Have questioned appointing of Lwandamina as ZESCO coach but the people involved have a Gold in him and its a shame. United has players who can compete with other African clubs but the technical bench is good at losing and recording draws and thats the truth.
