CAF CL: Shonga brace sends Orlando Pirates top of Group B
Justin Shonga netted a brace on Friday evening to send Orlando Pirates to the top of group B in the 2018/19 group stages when the Bucs beat Horoya of Guinea 3 – 0 in South Africa.
Pirates needed a win in this game having drawn the first game of the group stage away in Zimbabwe against Platinum. Coach Milutin Sredojević put out his strongest possible squad naming both Shonga and Augustine Mulenga in the starting XI.
Pirates proved too strong for the West Africans and they took the lead when Lorch showed composure in the box to shoot home for the opener on the stroke of half time.
Shonga was on target in the 73rd minute and he completed his brace two minutes later when he found himself in open space with only the goalkeeper to beat and he made no mistake to shoot home for his second. Despite Kante in the Horoya getting his fingers on the ball, the 22 year old’s shot was too strong to stop.
The Chipolopolo striker has been in great form in the Champions League scoring four goals in four appearances. He is currently the club’s highest scorer in the champions league.
In the other game in the group, Tunisian side ES Tunis beat Platinum of Zimbabwe 2 – 0 in Tunis. The result saw Tunis go second behind Pirates on goal difference.
Pirates: Mabokgwane, Jele, Ndengane, Mbekile, Maela, Mulenga, Nyatama, Mlambo, Lorch, Mahachi, Shonga.
Subs: Mpontshane, Mntambo, Makola, Mako, Pule, Munetsi.
