Buffaloes gore Eagles; Power blast Maite
Green Buffaloes left it late as they clinched a 1-0 hard fought victory over Green Eagles in the Barclays Cup 2018 third quarter final played at the Arthur Davies Stadium on Sunday.
Jack Chirwa, who was named the man-of-the-match, scored the only goal of the match from a free kick in the 81st minute.
A draw would have been a fair result for Green Eagles, who had held their own and would have felt aggrieved for failing to take the game to penalties. Spencer Sautu had a good chance to level matters two minutes after Green Buffaloes had taken the lead, but he blasted his effort from close range over and wide.
The result means that Green Buffaloes will meet their nursery side Young Green Buffaloes in one of the semi-finals scheduled for 20 October at the Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.
Meanwhile, Power Dynamos came from behind to draw 1-1 with Mufulira Wanderers in regulation time, with Alex Ng’onga’s 82nd equalizer taking the match to penalties after John Goma had given Mufulira Wanderers the lead on 49 minutes.
Kelvin Kaindu’s men won the match 5-4 on post-match penalties as Alex Ng’onga, Godfrey Ngenya, Kennedy Mudenda, Larry Bwalya and Lameck Kafwaya converted their spot kicks while White Mwanambaba hit the crossbar with his effort.
For Mufulira Wanderers, it was Aubrey Chamulwanda and Ronald Chibwe who had their kicks saved by Jackson Kakunta while Malama Chisopa, Mathews Macha, Nchimunya Munene and Joseph Sitali were all clinical.
The defeat denied Mufulira Wanderers their first appearance in the last four of the Barclays Cup. Had they won, it would have been the first time two lower division sides would have reached the semi-finals in the history of the competition.
