Blog-Why Nkana may dethrone Zesco United
The 2019/2020 season will kick off on the 31st of August with eighteen teams fighting for glory, Continental football and survival.
Zesco United will be looking to defend the title they have won in the past three seasons. The Ndola giants maybe by far the best team in the league but returning the title won’t be easy.
The ZamFoot Crew looks at the team that may just dethrone Zesco United after winning three consecutive titles in the last three years, Nkana. The twelve Super League Champions will be a big threat to the Zesco United dominance.
NO CONTINENTAL FOOTBALL
The case of missing out on the two most prestigious competitions on the Continent may have been a bitter pill to swallow for the ‘Kalampa’ faithful but wait a minute it may just be a blessing in disguise.
In the transitional league, Nkana were below par and no coincidence that they did not make the top two in Stream B but now they look to have organised themselves and are ready for the new challenge.
Unlike Zesco United, Green Eagles and Zanaco who are playing in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively, Nkana are only focused on the MTN/FAZ Super something that could work to their advantage as they will not have split focus like the other big guns in the league.
Nkana has brought in a number of good players to reinforce the squad. Nkana’s biggest departure was that of captain Walter Bwalya who has joined Egyptian giants El Gouna.
The Kitwe giants have however brought in 2018 top goalscorer Idriss Ilunga Mbombo who makes a return to the club less than a year after leaving Zambia to join Sudanese giants Al Hilal.
Mbombo is a proven striker in the Superleague and is a good addition to the Nkana set up. Simon Mulenga from Nakambala Leopards has been brought in just to add more depth to the squad.
In midfield, Zacharie Mombo has been brought in to increase the creative from the middle of the park and on the wings. The DR Congo winger formerly of giants AS Vita comes with a lot of promise and should he quickly settle he will be a big boost for Nkana. Progress has also been roped to further strengthen an already quite strong midfield. In defence, Kenyan defender Harun Shakava, Ugandan defender Bakaki Shafik and Collins Mulenga have been brought in.
Nkana has made serious reinforcements for the new season in all departments and the squad looks very strong, One more reason why Nkana may be the front runners for the 2019/2020 Superleague.
The Nkana technical bench was a let down in the transitional league and looks to be the weakest link at this point in the setup. The squad looks very strong, The motivation from the executive and sponsors is sorted but can Beston Chambeshi and Manfred Chabinga deliver the elusive 13th league title?
The two experienced gaffers need to up their technical capabilities and make sure they are not the ones dragging Nkana. If they work on killing off games and game management Nkana may just be on their way to a record 13th league title.
WHO STANDS IN THEIR WAY
The biggest threat to Nkana’s road to the 13th title is, of course, the defending Champions, Zesco United. The Ndola giants want to continue their dominance and will be a big contender for the title.
After losing the Charity shield to Zanaco head coach George Lwandamina warned that his side should not be judged by that loss as it may not be a true reflection of their strength heading into the new Superleague season.
“This team is just okay don’t judge us by this loss. Don’t even start thinking that we have to buy. Buy who? From where? Tell me which player should I buy?” he said.
And maybe he is right who knows? only the season will tell. The team from Ndola usually know how to just grind out a result and end up winning the league even when their performance may not be convincing at times.
The other big gun that will surely challenge for the title is Zanaco. The bankers have made reinforcements both to the technical bench and their squad and they look very strong ahead of the new season.
The bankers showed glimpses of what a formidable side they have become last Saturday when they outplayed Zesco United in the Charity shield and if that display is anything to go by it might be time for the eighth title to land at Sunset Stadium.
The Season kicks off on the 31st of August, Let’s sit back relax and wait to see how it all comes together and whether Nkana can dethrone Zesco United.
