Baroka Assistant coach eyes Wedson Nyirenda’s job after win over Sundowns
Baroka FC assistant coach Matsemela Thoka revealed interest to take over the top job following a two nil win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the Telkom Knockout Challenge Cup.
Thoka shockingly went straight to pitching for the former Chipolopolo coach Wedson Nyirenda’s job after guiding Bakgaga to the semi-finals of the Telkom Cup.
“I want to thank the management for giving me this opportunity to be in charge in the absence of the coach [Wedson Nyirenda], especially the chairman. He can see something in me,” Thoka said in an interview with Supersport.
“I don’t want to hurry things I know my chance will come to take over this team permanently. But for now I’m happy that they gave me this opportunity,” He added.

Nyirenda and his team have struggled in the league despite their Cup success so far.
BACK TO THE MATCH
Sundowns started with three fringe players in Mosa Lebusa, Reyaad Pieterse and Toni Silva but still had enough quality on the pitch to put fear in their opponents.
It’s Bakgaga however who started strong and twenty minutes into the match they were handed a penalty after Lebusa controlled Talent Chawapihwa’s header with his hand inside the box.
Mduduzi Mdantsane stepped up and converted from 12 yards to hand Baroka the lead. Sundowns started pushing for an equalizer but their link up going forward was off.
Baroka nearly doubled their lead minutes to half time but Tebogo Sodi’s headed effort went wide.
In the second half Sundowns started strong and had alot of possession.Despite their dominance, The Brazilians conceeded a second goal after Pieterse put the ball behind his own net after a mix up with Lebusa on 67 minutes.
Bakgaga held on to record their first ever win over Sundowns in all competitions.
