Barclays Cup Semi-final: Depleted Zesco face GBFC

Zesco United will be without six key players when they meet Green Buffaloes in the semi-finals of the Barclays Cup.

League top scorer Winstone Kalengo, captain and goalkeeper Jacob Banda, defense kingpin Dauti Musekwa are out with the Chipolopolo in Dubai together with head coach, George Lwandamina.

Added to that, Zesco have suspended their second highest scorer Jackson Mwanza, veteran striker Jonas Sakuwaha and midfield anchor Justine Zulu, who is also serving a FIFA ban, for indiscipline.

The Ndola side will count themselves lucky that Kenyan international David Owino was left out of the Harambe Stars’ squad for this week’s internationals.

With striker Humphrey Maseneko also out due to injury, Zesco will have to dig deep if they are to retain the title but one cannot bet against them load-shedding the soldiers as they have a huge squad.

Green Buffaloes also have Jack Chirwa and Buchizya Mfune out with the national team.

It will be an exciting semi final with Buffaloes coming in the fixture with the best form in the league going by the last five games.

The unfortunate decision of setting the semi-final of the country’s only cup tournament will deny the fans the chance to watch some of the finest talent while teams which have heavily invested in players may lose out so as to fufil national duty.

  3. FAZ should learn from other leagues in the World. Zambian league is the only one that goes on when national teams are playing. It is very unfair to clubs that contribute players to the national team and Kalusha himself being an ex soccer player must know this.
