Back to back!! Zesco United bag 2018 league title
Zesco United secured a seventh league title after they beat Nchanga Rangers 4 – 0 in a week 37 rescheduled fixture in Ndola on Wednesday afternoon. The George Lwandamina coached side made it back to back wins after they emerged victors in 2017 under Tenant Chembo.
Zesco only needed two points from the remaining fixtures but they were not leaving anything to chance as they ran riot scoring four times in the first half to condemn Nchanga Rangers to Division One.
Zesco led as early as the third minute through a Mwape Mwelwa goal before Solomon Sakala made it two. Two more goals from Jesse Were (penalty) and Marcel Kalonda made the game safe for Zesco before the teams even went for the break,
With two more games to play, the Ndola giants have an unassailable 80 points ahead of second placed Nkana who have 72 points. Nkana put a four point gap between them and Green Eagles who they beat 1 – 0 thanks to a Festus Mbewe goal. The result ended a 17 game unbeaten run for the Choma based side who a chasing their first CAF spot.
Green Buffaloes failed to take advantage of the battle between the two teams above them as they slumped to a 2 – 1 defeat against Power Dynamos to remain in third position level on points with Green Eagles. Green Buffaloes’ form in the run-in has been poor winning only once in the last six games.
With New Monze Swallows, Nchanga Rangers and KYSA confirmed as relegated, National Assembly, Napsa and Lumwana Radiants all won they games as the battle to survive relegation simmers.
National Assembly produced a shock result when they beat Lusaka Dynamos 2 – 0 at home to keep their hopes of survival alive despite remaining in the relegation zone on 36 points. They are a point behind Nakambala Leopards who are on free fall having lost 6 times in the last 8 games. Nakambala were beaten 3 – 1 by Napsa Stars who leaped from 15th to 14th position on 39 points.
