Ajax Cape Town announce the capture of Rodrick Kabwe

Ajax Cape Town are excited to announce that the club have agreed terms with Zambian international midfielder Rodrick Kabwe. He is set to join the club in January 2017.

“Chief Scout, Luis de Faria, spotted Rodrick on a recent scouting trip to Zambia,” said club CEO Ari Efstathiou. “We subsequently invited the player to come and train at Ikamva in Cape Town and he has been with us for 10 days.”

“The coach and the technical team are very impressed with him and he will be a perfect addition to the squad ahead of the second half of the 2016-17 season.”

Kabwe, set to join the club during the upcoming transfer window, will be the second player joining Ajax in the New Year, following the acquisition of Rheece Evans last week.

The 24-year-old, Kabwe, has won 25 international caps for Zambia (including friendly matches) and he was most recently part of the Chipolopolo squad for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon and Nigeria.

Kabwe also made an appearance off the bench in Zambia’s 1-1 draw in their final 2017 Africa Cup of Nation qualifying match with Kenya in Ndola, back in September.

On the final day of the 2016 MTN FAZ Super League (Zambia) season, Kabwe scored a brace for league champions Zanaco as they wrapped up their campaign in style with a 4-0 win over Nkwazi.

The Ndola-born left-footed playmaker scored 10 goals for Zanaco during a record-breaking campaign for the men from the Zambian capital.

Kabwe, who compares himself to former Premier Soccer League (PSL) star Noah Chivuta, spoke to ajaxct.co.za after he had agreed terms with the club:

“Luis saw me and recommend me to come here and now I find myself here in Cape Town at Ajax,” said Kabwe at the club’s Ikamva base.

“It has been really fantastic, the guys are friendly and I am feeling good. I have only been here for little over a week, so it is quite interesting and I hope we will build on our relationships when I come back [following Christmas].

Kabwe continued: “I am excited yes, this will be my first international club. I am really excited and I thank God for it. I wouldn’t say much about myself right now, come and watch for yourself next year.”

Ajax host Chippa United at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday evening in what will be the Urban Warrors final game of 2016. The league will resume in early February.

  1. I really don’t know whether or not this is a wise move for Rodrick seeing that he would have been playing continental football with Zanaco. But then again, if he performs beyond expectations at Ajax Cape Town he stand a better chance to clinch a professional contract in Europe. Ajax Cape Town has a lot of scouts and their club is linked to Ajax Amsterdam of Netherlands.

    • I don’t agree I have watched this player believe you me he will make it because he is a gifted left footer a rare type with exceptional skills. I know a good defender when i watch one, that’s the same way I spotted Thuso Phala of bafana bafana before he was even called to the national team. This boy was overlooked.

  2. Talent in zambia it is in abadance what is needed its a foreign coach . The current coach wont take us anyway. With this massive talent we need to build a team for world cup 2022.. Wada wada is reapeting the same stupidy thing that chicken was doing. Picking old horses and went on to say chipolopolo will qualify for world cup 2018

  3. Wrong move for a good player like him going to waste his talent he should waited after champion league football.. Best of lucky young boy

    • How many Zesco United players have moved after semi finals? Let the boy move while sun is still shinning, this thing of waiting ,what has happened to Bruce Musakanya with waiting thing?

  4. am not supporting this move.zambian players are not well taken care of in the s.African league talk of hichani, mukuka and Kennedy to mention a few,
its more like thats where careers are finished. just to be honest i can’t c king David’s future in s.a.
